Laboratory tests are often part of a routine check up to look for changes in your health. They help providers diagnose medical conditions, plan, evaluate treatments and monitor diseases. Having lab work is a medical procedure that test blood, urine, or other substances from your body.
The most common labs we order in our office are:
- CBC (complete blood count) - This test measures the types and numbers of cells in the blood, including red and white blood cells and platelets. This test is used to determine general health status, screen for disorders and evaluate nutritional status. It can help evaluate symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, and bruising. It can help diagnose conditions such as anemia, leukemia, and infection.
- CMP (Comprehensive Metabolic Panel) - This test evaluates metabolic function with a focus on organ systems.
- Lipid Panel - The lipid panel is a group of tests used to evaluate cardiac risk. It includes cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
- TSH (Thyroid Stimulation Hormone) - This test screens and monitors the function of the thyroid.
- Urinalysis - Often this is the first test performed. This is a general screening test used for early signs of disease. It may also be used to monitor diabetes or kidney function.
- HgA1c (hemoglobin A1c) - This test is used to diagnose and monitor diabetes.
- Cultures - Cultures are used to test for diagnosis and treatment of infections. Illness such as urinary tract infections, pneumonia, strep throat, MRSA can be detected and tested for appropriate antibiotic treatment.
There are four main reasons the provider would order lab work.
- Diagnosis (to include or exclude a diagnoses)
- Monitoring (for example to see if a medication is effective in controlling sugar)
- Screening (for example high cholesterol, and kidney functions)
- Research (to learn about the specifics of a disease process)
Each of the laboratory test results must be understood within the context of your overall health and should be utilized along with the remaining exams or tests.
