X-Ray Imaging · Decatur, AL
Medical imaging plays an important role in helping diagnose and evaluate a wide range of medical conditions and injuries.X-rays are one of the most commonly used forms of diagnostic imaging. An x-ray creates images of structures inside the body, particularly bones and certain areas of the chest and abdomen. A specialized machine emits a small amount of ionizing radiation, which passes through the body and is captured to create the image.
The amount of radiation used during most routine x-rays is very small. Your provider will recommend an x-ray when the potential diagnostic benefit outweighs the minimal radiation exposure involved.
How you are positioned depends on the type of x-ray being performed. Several different views may be needed. You will need to remain still while the image is being taken because movement can cause blurry images. You may also be asked to briefly hold your breath depending on the area being examined.
X-rays are generally painless, although some positions may be uncomfortable for a short period of time. Common types of x-rays may include:
- Abdominal x-ray
- Bone x-ray
- Chest x-ray
- Extremity x-ray
- Hand x-ray
- Joint x-ray
- Lumbosacral spine x-ray
- Neck x-ray
- Pelvis x-ray
- Sinus x-ray
- Thoracic spine x-ray
- Skeletal x-rays
X-rays can help providers evaluate a variety of concerns, including bone fractures, infections, joint problems, lung conditions, certain digestive concerns, and other abnormalities.
An x-ray must be ordered by a medical provider. If you are experiencing pain, an injury, respiratory symptoms, or another concern, your provider will determine whether x-ray imaging is appropriate as part of your evaluation.
When an x-ray is performed in our office, the provider can review the images as part of your visit and discuss any appropriate next steps with you.
